This month’s virtual concert is a journey into the heart of Johann Sebastian Bach’s musical soul. The organ was his laboratory, his pulpit, and the canvas for his grandest architectural designs. As a master virtuoso and consultant, Bach utilized the organ's vast tonal colors and mechanical complexity to bridge the earthly and the divine. From intricate, interlocking fugues to deeply emotional chorale preludes, the organ is the definitive lens through which Bach unified intellectual perfection with profound spiritual expression.
Paradoxically, Bach was never to enjoy regular access to a large organ made expressly to his own specification; though he played on, and acted as consultant for, many fine organs, part of the integrity of his organ writing stems from the fact that it does not require huge organs to make it effective.
